Twenty-Six: New Works By Risk

DECEMBER 13 – DECEMBER 20, 2008
Opening reception Saturday, December 13, from 7-11 PM

In a career spanning twenty-six years, graffiti artist RISK has impacted the evolution of street writing as an artform here in Los Angeles and worldwide. His signature tag ran on the subway cars of New York, becoming the first writer outside of New York to be recognized by the same legendary graffiti artists who inspired him early on. In L.A. RISK continued to push the limits further than they had ever gone before by bombing – what would later be referred to in the graffiti world as a 'heaven' – on freeway overpasses and other highly visible spots throughout the city gaining much notoriety for his unique style. At the peak of his career he took graffiti from the streets and into the gallery with the launch of the Third Rail series of art shows; he later parlayed the Third Rail brand into the first authentic line of graffiti-inspired clothing.

Before he'd ever heard of graffiti, RISK was unconsciously writing it. As a child, he filled sketchbook after sketchbook with images, not just of people and things but also letters. He even had spray paint in his hand before ever applying it to a wall, using it to paint BMX bikes. "Even back then I think I was addicted to spray paint," he recalls. "I just loved painting with it."

In describing this exhibition, he states:

"Twenty-Six is a collection letters that I painted as if I were painting on the streets, using what paint and materials I had in my studio. I sat and pumped them out, making sure they all had movement and the energy of good old school graffiti. It is a celebration of where I'm at today and where I have come from. Twenty-six letters of the alphabet, twenty-six years; I can't think of a better way to define myself and my view of graffiti art."

Contemplating the arc of his career, RISK attributes his success to something deep inside him. "I think I was the first to do a lot of stuff because I was competitive. I always wanted to take things one step further."

Justice faking their live sets?
18 November, 2008 | 4.25PM
Section: Music News Topics: Technology
Written by: Terry Church

Poor old Justice are having a hard week. Last Thursday the duo admitted in an interview that their album [†] contained at least 400 uncleared samples, and now comes this photo which shows the pair faking it during a live set.

The MIDI controller on the left ain’t plugged in, but the tall fuzzy-haired one is pretending that it is - he’s got an intense concentrated look on his face whilst moving the faders and knobs. Busted!

A close up reveals the MIDI controller to be unplugged
The thing is - this may not be the best place to discuss this topic - live electronic music is a hard thing to do.

Anyone with a shred of understanding of how the music is made knows that it’s near impossible to play electronic music 100% live, unless you have the talent of somebody like The Bays, who can play improvised dance music using only instruments.

Daft Punk might just be the best live dance act of the last few years, but their set is pre-programmed down to every last beat.

When you’ve got a superbly powerful light show and a giant pyramid light thingy in sync with the music, there’s no way the show could be pulled off without pre-programming it.

So what are dance bands like Justice supposed to do? At least make an effort, and control some of the filters and FX to give the impression of a live performance.

Or remember to plug the damn MIDI controllers in and smile.

JAZZANOVA REMIX CONTEST

many of my friends and family dabble or specialize in music you may want to give this a try.

buy Album at
JPC or Amazon

buy Single at iTunes,
Amazon or JPC

check out the new music video of Jazzanova's "I Can See"
on youtube

Invitation to the great Jazzanova Remix Contest

Jazzanova along with their partners from Soundcloud and Ableton invite everybody to participate in a new remix contest: This time the Berlin-based DJ and producer collective Jazzanova puts the tracks of its latest single "I Can See" at your disposal for remixing. Which is kind of funny since normally it are the folks from Jazzanova that remix tracks of artists like Lenny Kravitz, Common, Ursula Rucker, 4hero, Master At Work, Fat Freddys Drop, United Future Organization, Azymuth, or Calixo. Now they offer one of their very own tracks to their "competitors".

A really attractive set of prizes is waiting for the lucky winner: a package of Ableton’s Live 7 software and a one-year premium membership at Soundcloud as well as the chance of a digital release on Jazzanova’s Berlin-based label Sonarkollektiv. The remixes will be presented on the Jazzanova and Soundcloud homepages. And the winner of the competition will be picked by the Jazzanova expert team itself. Participate in the remix contest here!

We still offer you the possibility to subscribe to Verve's new Jazzanova newsletter. After registration you will automatically receive all information about Jazzanova. Needless to say that you'll also continue to receive the Sonar Kollektiv newsletter.

Join our record release party on November 15th at Cookies, Berlin featuring Ben Westbeech and Gilles Peterson!

Big Geezers art show, this saturday Nov. 8th

One of Europe’s most creative crews will be in Los Angeles to open their Big Geezers show, curated by The London Police, at the Scion Installation Gallery on November 8th, 2008.
Big Geezers will feature Minivila (Croatia), Galo (Italy), Flying Fortress (Germany), Wayne Horse (Germany), Miss Riel (Iceland), Abner Preis, Pez (Spain), Morcky Troubles (Italy), and The London Police (UK) in a wonderfully eclectic and European group showing.
Big Geezers, is a showing from a would-be family of artists who, over several years, have met, worked together, and traveled the globe in search of adventure, hope, and (of course) good times.
The BG crew will blend visual ingredients with interactive methods to delight gallery enthusiasts with an entertaining opening night, as art and interactive installations will be on display for the duration of the exhibit.
Big Geezers plans to entertain the senses as the group decided that in LA "entertainment" is the name of the game. Bring your camera and eat well before you come to the opening, cause these guys like to party!
Big Geezers will run from November 8 – November 29, 2008. More info at scion.com/space
